EU-US Safe Harbour Background

The European Commission’s “Data Protection Directive” prohibits companies from transferring, storing or using personal information about residents of European Union (“EU”) member countries outside the EU without first adopting certain safeguards to prevent unauthorised use or access of such information (“adequacy standard”).  Given that the United States and the EU member countries have adopted different approaches to safeguarding personal information, the EU and the United States Department of Commerce in July 2000 adopted a “safe harbour” framework that allows US companies to transfer, store or use personal information about residents of EU member countries while at the same time meeting the “adequacy standard” of the Data Protection Directive.  Under the safe harbour framework, US companies meeting the safe harbour criteria are considered by EU member countries and organisations within those countries as meeting the adequacy standard of the Data Protection Directive.

TeleTech has received its safe harbour designation and has a Safe Harbour Privacy Policy with regard to personal information in the EU member countries.
